Tazewell, Virginia – Throughout September, the Southwest Virginia Community Health System (SVCHS) is commemorating National Recovery Month by hosting its second annual Walk to Recovery events in various locations, showcasing support for individuals on their recovery journeys. These events are set to take place on September 29, aligning with National Recovery Day, at locations in Tazewell, Bristol, and Saltville, where participation from the community is encouraged.

The Walk to Recovery events aim to combat the stigma associated with substance use disorders while showing support for individuals at various stages of recovery. Statistical information reveals that 9.9% of adults are affected by substance use disorders, similar to chronic diseases like diabetes and depression. Alarmingly, only 13% of adults with these disorders seek treatment. This initiative by SVCHS is critical in fostering a supportive atmosphere for those in recovery, as many individuals report feeling isolated from family and friends.

The locations and times for the Walk to Recovery events are as follows:

  • Tazewell: Lincolnshire Park, 3119 Riverside Dr., North Tazewell, VA, from noon to 2 p.m.
  • Bristol: Cumberland Square Park, 200 Lee Street, Bristol, VA, from noon to 2 p.m.
  • Saltville: Saltville town stage, 217 Palmer Avenue, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

New Day Recovery (NDR), a prominent outpatient substance use disorder provider under the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), plays a significant role in these events. By integrating evidence-based treatments for opioid, methamphetamine, and alcohol use disorders, NDR emphasizes the importance of the recovery process. The program merges behavioral health therapy with medications like Suboxone and aims to tackle social determinants of health affecting patients.

Through its services, NDR has supported 267 patients in 2025 alone, and its success rates for opioid treatment range from 40% to 60%. These figures stand in stark contrast to the much lower success rates of 5% to 20% seen with traditional abstinence-only models.

NDR recognizes that many individuals entering rehabilitation programs confront difficulties, particularly in finding care for their pets during treatment. Acknowledging this challenge, the organization collaborates with PAWsitive Recovery, a Colorado-based entity that offers support for the pets of those undergoing drug and alcohol treatment.

National Recovery Month, established in 1989, promotes evidence-based interventions and recovery practices across the nation. As part of the celebration, all New Day Recovery locations will be open to the public, offering community resources, vendors, and free giveaways to foster awareness and community engagement.

Those interested in learning more about New Day Recovery or participating in the Walk to Recovery events can contact the organization at 276-496-4492.
