Man Charged with First-Degree Murder in Child’s Death

Bristol, Tennessee –

A 35-year-old man, Dexter S. Montgomery, has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in connection to the tragic death of a 3-year-old child. The Bristol Police Department reported that the charges came following an incident that occurred on December 19, 2023.

Police responders received a call regarding an unresponsive child at an apartment located on Godsey Road. Emergency medical personnel transported the child to a hospital in Knoxville for treatment. Unfortunately, the child succumbed to their injuries and died shortly after arriving at the medical facility. An autopsy conducted at the William L. Jenkins Forensic Center subsequently classified the death as a homicide.

After a thorough investigation led by local detectives, Montgomery was indicted by a Sullivan County Grand Jury on May 9, 2025, in relation to this horrific incident. He has been placed in the Sullivan County Jail and is currently held on a $250,000 bond.
