Ilene was born on April 8, 1942, in Guin, AL, to parents John Pearson and Audrey Mae Humber. She married Robert James “Buck” Hays on April 8, 1961, in Moline, IL. The couple later returned to Tennessee to build their life together, and Ilene dedicated herself to caring for Buck until his death in 2007.

Professionally, Ilene was a retired bus driver for special needs children, a role that reflected her compassionate nature. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert James “Buck” Hays; her parents, John Pearson and Audrey Mae Humber; and siblings Melvin and Luie Humber, as well as her sister Charlene Baccus.

Ilene is survived by her only son, Jamey Hays of Limestone, along with two grandchildren: Jordan Hays (Kelly) of Bristol, VA, and Beth McKay (Shane) of Lexington, SC. She leaves behind three great-grandsons: Jaxson Hays, Grayson, and Liam McKay. Additional family includes her sister Lurene Corkren, sisters-in-law Frankie Humber and Delyn Humber, and her best friend, Barbara Shelton, who shared a close bond with Ilene.

A devoted family member, Ilene enjoyed reading her well-worn Bible, praying, listening to music—including Elvis Presley, dancing, and spending quality time with her loved ones. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Hospice House Bristol and the staff at Johnson City Medical Center for their support during this time.

Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Cherry Hill Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery in Ducktown Community. Pastor Mark Hill will officiate the service, with family and friends serving as pallbearers. The cemetery is located at 470 Ducktown Rd., Limestone, TN 37681.
