BRISTOL, Tenn. — Alpha Metallurgical Resources, the coal supplier headquartered in Bristol, reported Friday that it lost $9.3 million in the third quarter of 2026, a smaller loss than it posted in the spring but still a sign that rising costs are weighing on the company.
The loss worked out to 73 cents per share. Revenue for the July-through-September period came to $562.2 million, and the company said it sold 3.9 million tons of coal, up from 3.5 million tons in the second quarter.
Alpha, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol AMR, supplies metallurgical coal used in steelmaking. Its second-quarter loss had been $12.3 million, or 96 cents per share, so the latest results show some improvement from three months earlier.
Adjusted EBITDA, a measure the company uses to track operating earnings, rose to $29.4 million from $25.6 million in the prior quarter. Net realized pricing for its met coal segment averaged $121.09 per ton, while the cost of producing and selling that coal climbed to $106.93 per ton from $103.07.
Chief executive Andy Eidson said volumes improved compared with the first half of the year but that cost pressures continue to shape results. He also said the company has committed 3.5 million tons to domestic customers for shipment in 2027.
A June windstorm wrecked a key piece of loading equipment, a stacker reclaimer, at the Dominion Terminal Associates export facility in Newport News, Va., and the company is still working around it. Alpha said it plans to lean on other Hampton Roads terminals while that equipment is replaced and does not expect large capital spending tied to the repair.
Cash from operations rose to $46.9 million in the quarter, and Alpha listed total liquidity of $443.4 million as of Sept. 30. Shares of the Bristol company have fallen 28% since the start of the year.
