Born on April 7, 1933, in Bristol, VA, Modlin spent most of her life in Smithfield, VA, where she made significant contributions both as an educator and an active member of the community. Throughout her career, she taught high school in Smithfield and Virginia Beach, and she also taught seventh grade in Hinesville, GA.
Modlin’s educational background included graduating from Smithfield High School, attending Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, and earning Phi Beta Kappa honors at UNC-Chapel Hill. She was also a proud member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. In addition to her teaching career, Modlin worked in real estate for many years.
Beyond her professional life, Modlin was deeply engaged in her community. She served as a long-time member and chairperson of the Smithfield Historic and Architectural Review Committee. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Charles Robert Modlin, and their sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Christian and Paitra Moore Modlin and Brian Davis and Nancy Spady Modlin. She leaves behind her grandchildren, Charles Christian Modlin, Christina Grace Modlin, and John Devin Arnold and wife Hannah Bradshaw Arnold, as well as her great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Naomi Arnold, Phineas Brock Arnold, Woodrow Hundley Grey Arnold, and Lawrence Alexander Arnold. Modlin is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
