Construction of a baseball field at Bristol Motor Speedway for the MLB event

News Summary

The Bristol Motor Speedway is set to undergo a remarkable transformation into a baseball field for the inaugural MLB Speedway Classic. Scheduled for August 2, 2025, this historic event will feature the Atlanta Braves facing off against the Cincinnati Reds, marking the first Major League Baseball game in Tennessee. Preparations include extensive renovations with advanced lighting and synthetic grass, aimed at providing an exceptional fan experience. With a robust lineup of entertainment and sports, this event is anticipated to draw significant crowd attendance, potentially breaking multiple records.

Bristol, Tennessee

The Bristol Motor Speedway is being transformed into a baseball field to host the first-ever MLB Speedway Classic, a historic event for the state of Tennessee. Scheduled for August 2, 2025, the game will see the Atlanta Braves take on the Cincinnati Reds, marking a significant milestone as the first Major League Baseball game held in the state.

Preparations for the event began with demolition work at the Bristol Motor Speedway starting on June 23, 2025. Construction activities have promptly followed since June 24, with a substantial amount of material already being utilized for the project. Approximately 17,500 tons of gravel is being laid to level the infield, complemented by the delivery of 340 tons of Pennsylvania clay, which will form the playing surface of the baseball field.

Field and Facility Details

The baseball field will feature a synthetic grass covering of 124,000 square feet, employing the same playing surface as the Toronto Blue JaysRogers Centre. To ensure optimal lighting conditions for players and fans, Musco Sports Lighting is installing 215 lights around the track to eliminate shadows during gameplay.

In addition to the field, facilities for the teams are being constructed, which will include locker rooms, showers, strength and conditioning rooms, offices for coaches and trainers, and batting cages. The temporary renovations are being meticulously executed by BaAM Productions over a planned period of about 33 days leading up to the game.

Seating and Fan Experience

The event will feature specially constructed grandstands along both the first and third base lines, along with essential components such as broadcast booths, camera platforms, and media positions. Alongside the baseball game, a designated fan zone is being set up, offering performances from major artists including Tim McGraw, Pitbull, and country star Jake Owen. Visitors can also enjoy a Ferris wheel, local food trucks, interactive baseball games, and have photo opportunities with branded MLB stock cars.

For context, the center field will measure 400 feet, while the alleys will extend to 375 feet, and the base lines will be set at 330 feet. After the game, all baseball elements are scheduled to be removed to restore the venue for the NASCAR playoff night race taking place on September 13, 2025.

Historical Significance

The Bristol Motor Speedway is no stranger to hosting large-scale events, having previously been the site of the Battle of Bristol, a football game that drew a record crowd of 156,990 attendees in 2016. Major League Baseball is collaborating closely with the Speedway to cultivate a fan experience that captures the excitement similar to that of NASCAR events. Current public interest in the Speedway Classic is notably high, with expectations that it may set a new record for the largest crowd to attend a baseball game.

Should attendance exceed the previous record of 115,300 set during a 2008 exhibition game at the Los Angeles Coliseum, this event will not only be historic for Tennessee but could also redefine the landscape of baseball events nationwide. Currently, the construction process has been progressing smoothly without significant complications, showcasing the effective collaboration between MLB and Bristol Motor Speedway.
