BRISTOL, Tenn. — Bristol Ballet Co. will dance The Nutcracker three times at Paramount Bristol in December, keeping alive a holiday run the company has staged every year since 1965.
The first downtown show starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11. Two more follow the next day, one at noon and one at 6 p.m. Paramount Bristol performances of the ballet have sold out each of the past three seasons, so the company is urging families to buy early.
Tickets are sold only through the Paramount website and its box office, which opens two hours before each show. The theater says it will not honor seats bought from resale sites. If a show is not sold out, door tickets cost an extra $5 plus tax and fees, and all sales are final.
Before the Bristol dates, the company opens its 78th season with a free 7 p.m. show on Dec. 5 in Pound, Va., held in the J.W. Adams Combined School auditorium known as the Wise County Performing Arts Center. That night marks the 50th anniversary of Pro-Art Association, which is co-presenting it. Seats there are free but reservations are taken through Pro-Art.
The local version gives the classic a regional twist. Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters replace Mother Ginger and her Polichinelles, a nod to the 1927 Bristol Sessions and the city as the Birthplace of Country Music.
Local dancers from the company fill the cast alongside guest professionals. Erin Ginn returns from New York City to dance the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Clara travels to the Land of Sweets after helping free the Nutcracker from a spell cast by the Rat Queen.
