Dual-purpose neighborhood: a dense residential zone of working and middle-class households that transforms into one of the largest sports venues on Earth during NASCAR race weekends. On race weekends, the speedway functions as a temporary city of 150,000+ visitors, overwhelming local infrastructure. Outside race season the area is quiet and predominantly residential.
History
Bristol Motor Speedway opened July 23, 1961 as a half-mile track. Through successive expansions under Speedway Motorsports Inc. (acquired January 22, 1996), the track grew to its peak capacity of approximately 162,000 seats, later reduced to 146,000. The track hosted the largest college football crowd in history — 156,990 — on October 9, 2016, when Tennessee defeated Virginia Tech.
