June Community Events Announced Across Multiple Locations Featuring Vacation Bible Schools, Concerts, and More

Marion, VA – A variety of community events are set to take place throughout June, offering something for everyone in the region. From Vacation Bible Schools designed for children and teens to concerts and educational presentations, residents can find numerous opportunities to engage with their community.

Vacation Bible Schools

The Special Needs Vacation Bible School takes place at the Marion Church of the Nazarene from Monday, June 2, to Friday, June 6, from 6 to 7 p.m. This program welcomes individuals of all ages, featuring the theme “Trusting Jesus in a Wild World”. Activities during the week will include Bible lessons, memory verses, music, crafts, recreation, and snacks.

In addition, a Mainstream Vacation Bible School will occur at the same location and under the same theme from Sunday, June 8, through Friday, June 13, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Genealogy and Community Meetings

On Tuesday, June 3, at 6:30 p.m., the Watauga Association of Genealogists will hold a meeting at the Johnson City Public Library and online via Zoom. Retired Air Force veteran and historian Allen Jackson will be the guest speaker, discussing the military use of animals in World War I and connections to local veterans.

The Sullivan County Board of Education will meet on Thursday, June 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the Central Office Boardroom, located at 154 Blountville Bypass. A work session will precede the meeting at 4:30 p.m. in Room 212, where public comments are welcome with the prior submission of Form 1.404.F1.

Support Groups

The Al-Anon Support Group meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the basement of Lebanon United Methodist Church in Elk Creek, Virginia. Individuals looking for support can contact 276-655-4941 for further information.

Festivals and Special Events

The annual Blue Ridge Fiber Fest will be held on Friday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Higgins Fairgrounds in Sparta, North Carolina. The event is free with a suggested parking donation benefiting local Marine Corps Leagues. Attendees can find over 40 vendors, a consignment sale of used equipment, and free FAMACHA training lectures regarding sheep and goats.

The Crooked Road Ramblers will perform at the Rex Theater in Galax, Virginia, on the evening of June 6 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. with free admission.

Additionally, Disney’s “Frozen,” the Broadway Musical is being showcased at Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia, with performances scheduled from May 24 to August 17, featuring hits like the Academy Award-winning anthem “Let It Go”.

Community Support and Family Activities

The Elk River Helping Hands Concert at Lees-McRae College’s Hayes Auditorium on June 6 will feature artists Jimmy Fortune and bluegrass duo Darin & Brooke Aldridge. Proceeds will assist relief efforts for Hurricane Helene.

For a fun family outing, the First Fridays: ‘Putting Around Downtown’ Mini Golf Event will take place on June 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Bristol. This event includes a nine-hole mini golf challenge hosted by local businesses, with a suggested donation of $2 to participate.

Children under 15 can enjoy a free fishing day at the Damascus Kids Fishing Day on June 14 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Town Park Gazebo.

Cultural Events

The Downtown Home Tour occurs on June 14 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in Knoxville, Tennessee, showcasing various urban homes with tickets starting at $30.

Another significant event is the ribbon-cutting of the new Blue Ridge Snorkel Trail Site at Damascus Town Park on June 14 at 1 p.m., celebrating the addition of the Laurel Creek Confluence site.

A musical tribute, “Swinging With THE RAT PACK!”, will take place at Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia, on June 14 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this nostalgic performance can be purchased online.
