Bristol, VA – Michael (Scott) McDannel, a beloved member of the Fairfield community, passed away at the age of 54 on May 11, 2025, at his home in Bristol, Virginia. His sudden departure has left family, friends, and former classmates mourning the loss of a man known for his passion for storytelling and his deep appreciation for family and friendship.
Scott McDannel was born on December 7, 1970, in Jacksonville, Florida. He grew up to be a vibrant member of his family and community, recognized for both his athleticism and his engaging personality during his formative years at Fairfield Community High School. As a student, he played on the Mules football team, demonstrating his dedication to both sports and teamwork.
An avid fisherman, Scott enjoyed spending time outdoors, which he often paired with recounting stories from his adventures. His love for storytelling was well known among family and friends as he had a remarkable way of connecting with people through his narratives. Scott had a warm and friendly nature that endeared him to everyone he met, making a positive impact on those around him.
Scott is survived by his mother, Diana Vaughan, and his son, Jacob DeJarnatt (Cheyenne) of Fairfield. In addition, he leaves behind two daughters, Josie (Kelsey) Wingfield, who resides in Owensboro, Kentucky, and Matti McDannel of Herrin. He was a proud grandfather to Graham Wingfield, also living in Owensboro, who will carry on his legacy.
Scott’s family extended to include three sisters: Staci McDannel from St Joe, and Nikki (Jeremy) Carter and Holli (Heath) Belva of Fairfield. He also had a brother, Adam (Melanie) Vaughan, who resides in Fairfield. Among those mourning his loss are a special aunt and uncle, Sharon and Darrell Bryan from Champaign, as well as several nieces and nephews who adored him.
Scott had a lifelong partnership with Melissa Wampler, whose family resides in Bristol, Tennessee. His close-knit family was not only his support system but also a source of joy and inspiration throughout his life. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his father, Mike McDannel, as well as several grandparents and a brother, Ryan Vaughan, each of whom Scott cherished deeply.
A graveside service is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Bestow Cemetery in Geff, Illinois. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate Scott’s life and the lasting impact he made. The service will provide an opportunity for loved ones to pay their respects and share their fond memories of Scott.
