Mixed working-class and lower-middle-class residential neighborhood with significant civil rights heritage. The Slater Community Center at 325 McDowell Street is the neighborhood's civic heart and houses the city's Parks & Recreation department.
History
The Slater School was built during the era of Tennessee's separate-but-equal school policy to serve Bristol's African American student population. Its conversion to a community center following desegregation preserved the building and its community function.
