The Bristol Tennessee Police Department (BTPD) is mourning the loss of K9 Officer Kai, who died unexpectedly on April 24, 2025, following a sudden medical emergency. The 8-year-old Belgian Malinois was a valued member of the department, known for his proficiency in detecting explosives and supporting law enforcement efforts in apprehending suspects.

Kai fell ill during his annual certification training session with his handler, Lt. Matt Cousins. Despite the efforts to save him, he was unable to recover from the illness, leading to his untimely death. BTPD Chief Matt Austin recognized the significant contributions Kai made during his career, emphasizing the dog’s exceptional skills and unwavering dedication to service.

Throughout his tenure with the BTPD, Kai conducted a remarkable 175 explosive searches, demonstrating his expertise in the field. He was instrumental in apprehending 21 suspects, showcasing his pivotal role in enhancing public safety within the Bristol community. Kai’s training spanned nearly 1,700 hours, further highlighting the commitment and rigor involved in preparing K9 officers for their vital duties.

In addition to his work with the BTPD, Kai assisted other federal, state, and local agencies on 57 occasions across the Tri-Cities region, further illustrating his importance as a collaborative asset in law enforcement efforts. Kai was born in Holland and was imported to the United States in 2017 for specialized training in Ohio, eventually joining the BTPD in January 2018.

Cousins, who has lost both a partner and a cherished friend.
