Lewisburg, WV – Elizabeth Jane “Betty” McGurty, a beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully at the age of 79 on Thursday, May 29, 2025. She was at her daughter’s home in Bristol, Tennessee, surrounded by love.
Betty was born on December 25, 1945, to the late Wesley L. Wise and Elsie Mae Banta Wise. Her life was characterized by her unwavering love and kindness, qualities that endeared her to family and friends alike. Betty’s legacy is marked by her devoted relationships and the impact she made in the lives of those around her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Daniel McGurty, and her granddaughter, Kandis Renee Brown. Betty also mourned the loss of her twin brother, William Wise, her brother, Jerry Wise, and her sisters, Janet Curry and Shirley Sinks. Despite these losses, her spirit remained strong throughout her life.
Betty is survived by her loving daughter, Sandra Miller, and son-in-law, Lee. She shared her later years with her longtime companion, Jerry Linton, and his daughter, Angela Linton. Additionally, her family includes her sister, Eileen Yount, her brother-in-law, Marlin Sink, and her sisters-in-law, Debbie and Jackie McGurty. Betty is also survived by her grandson, John Thomas Smith, and her great-grandchildren: Noah, Ethan, Madilyn, Brayden, Isabella, Kegan, Lilly, Kain, Scarlette, and Chloe. Numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who cherished her will miss her dearly.
A funeral service is scheduled to honor Betty’s life on Tuesday, June 3, at 12 noon, at Morgan Funeral Home in Lewisburg. Pastor Gary Baker will officiate the service, offering a moment for friends and family to celebrate her life and the good memories shared with her. Prior to the service, the family will host a public viewing on Monday, June 2, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Following the funeral service, Betty will be laid to rest in the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum located in Clintonville, West Virginia. This final resting place is sure to be a poignant reminder of the warmth and love she radiated throughout her life.
