SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The San Francisco Giants spent the first Monday of the offseason trimming their roster, removing nine players so they could bring 15 others back from the 60-day injured list.

Five of the departed players were claimed off waivers by other clubs: right-hander Jose Butto by Texas, Duncan Davitt by Cincinnati, Brett Harris and Shay Whitcomb by Philadelphia and Zach Morgan by Baltimore. Joel Kuhnel and Seth Lonsway went unclaimed and were sent outright to Triple-A Sacramento. Tristan Beck was released and plans to pitch in Asia next season, while lefty Reiver Sanmartin was put in DFA limbo.

The room was needed after a year in which San Francisco used 71 players, tying a record, and ended the season with 24 on the injured list. Among those reinstated Monday were Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, Casey Schmitt and Harrison Bader.

Butto, 28, arrived in the 2025 deal that sent Tyler Rogers to the Mets and was once viewed as a possible setup man. He pitched in just three games this season before an April operation on a blood clot in his throwing arm. Beck, 30, joined the organization in 2019 in the trade that moved Mark Melancon to Atlanta and posted a 4.08 ERA in 85 appearances over four seasons.

The club also turned down an $800,000 option on reliever Rowan Wick for 2027, though he stays under team control as an arbitration-eligible player.

More decisions are ahead. Prospects who are Rule 5 eligible need a 40-man spot by Nov. 17 or they can be drafted away, and contract tender decisions for arbitration-eligible players are due Nov. 20.
