MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Thursday is the final chance for Memphis and Shelby County voters to cast an early ballot before the Nov. 3 election, and turnout so far is running well ahead of the last midterm.

More than 140,000 people had voted early in Shelby County through Wednesday, according to state figures, an increase of nearly 60% over the same point in 2022.

Registered county residents can vote at any early voting site in the county. Sites are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, according to the state’s early voting site list, with locations that include 1574 East Shelby Drive and 3939 Riverdale Road in Memphis, 915 Chelsea Avenue in Memphis, 1900 North Germantown Parkway in Cordova, 9375 Davies Plantation Road in Bartlett, 575 Shelton Road in Collierville, 3505 South Houston Levee Road in Germantown, 11842 Otto Lane in Arlington and 7942 Church Road in Millington.

Tre Hargett, the secretary of state who oversees Tennessee’s elections, visited Memphis on Wednesday. He said the numbers are up from 2022 but should be higher still, noting there was no competitive governor’s race that year, that 2018 was the last one, and that turnout is still trailing that year once population growth is considered.

Hargett said a smooth Election Day would mean every piece of voting equipment in the state working, people able to vote efficiently, and results reported accurately and on time.

Memphis voters interviewed at the polls this week named the economy as their top concern, along with health care, the Memphis Safe Task Force and data center projects.

Voters who miss the early window can still vote at their assigned precinct on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
